How HandyCost estimates a job
Every estimate is labor plus materials. Labor is the job's typical hours, adjusted for difficulty and quantity, times an hourly rate for your region. Materials are standard parts and hardware — or zero, if you supply them. If the total falls under the local service-call minimum, that floor is applied and shown as its own line.
Every constant is laid out on the methodology page. Nothing here is a quote — it is a planning tool.

What affects your estimate
Five things move a handyman bill more than anything else.
- Labor — the biggest line on most jobs. Hours × your area's handyman rate.
- Complexity — tight access, old wiring or plumbing, and extra prep all add hours.
- Materials — mounts, hardware, and supplies, unless you provide them yourself.
- Region — labor rates in a high-cost metro run roughly double a low-cost area.
- The service-call minimum — most pros bill a per-visit floor, so tiny jobs cost more per job than bundled ones.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a planning range, not a quote. The numbers are triangulated from public handyman price guides and reflect typical jobs — your real price depends on your home, your area, and the specific pro. Always confirm with an on-site quote.
Why a range instead of one price?
Because handyman work genuinely varies. The same job can take twice as long depending on access, wall type, and the age of what's already there. A single number would be false precision — the low–high range is the honest answer.
Does the estimate include materials?
It can. Use the "who supplies the materials" input: choose the pro to fold standard parts and hardware into the estimate, or choose yourself for a labor-only figure.
What is a service-call minimum?
Most handymen bill a minimum charge per visit — often one to two hours of labor — to make the trip worthwhile. When a job falls under that floor, the calculator shows a separate "service-call minimum" line. Bundling several small jobs into one visit spreads that cost out.
How do handyman rates vary by region?
A lot. Hourly labor in a higher cost-of-living metro can run close to double a lower-cost area. The region input shifts the whole estimate to match your local market.
Should I get more than one quote?
Yes. Use the estimate to know the right ballpark, then compare two or three real quotes. The "get matched" button connects you with vetted pros in your area to make that easy.
